Poor performance with UpdateList operation?

Has anybody else experienced poor performance when using updatelist with large record sets?  We're sending 100 records with our updatelist operation to Project Task and it's taking 4+ minutes to complete in Production, but on our sandbox it only takes 1-2 minutes.  We turned off "Run Server SuiteScripts and Trigger Workflows" already.  That helped a bit but not much (the numbers mentioned were after turning it off).

Any other suggestions?  Anybody else see this very slow performance with calling the SOAP API?
