Automatic Email upon Event

Hi,

We wish to create a reminder service for our clients. This could be an event created from a customer or by ourselves, i.e. we receive an order and then we set a reminder to be sent in 1 month saying 'don't forget to order your next supply'.

How can we do this? I know about custom fields etc, but can't see anyway to create any automatic email firing.
