Redirects for obsolete items

in Web Site / E-Commerce

Will the new web site redirects work for an item that is obsolete, or no longer available?  We have several online items that have become obsolete, and that have replaced by other items.

Exactly how do I set things up so that if a visitor had the old url bookmarked, or is cached in Google, that it re-directs to the new url?

We made several attempts and can't get it to work.
