Online Forms and Mandatory Fields

is there any way around having mandatory fields on the customer form that aren't mandatory on an online form that creates a new lead when someone fills in their basic details?

we have 3 mandatory to get our Sales people to supply some marketing info when they add a new lead/prospect.  don't want these on the online form though
