Descriptive URLs - links gone haywire

We have just tried switching on descriptive URLs and found that links to our testimonial pages, which are Information Items, have been lost and links to seemingly random Product Items have been substituted. I.e. click on a testimonial link in the web site and get a random product page (inventory or non-inventory item).
Switch off descriptive URLs and the problem goes away.
We can see no logical reason for this. It looks like there may be some kind of priblem with the Custom Template for our Testimonials page.
Has anyone experienced similar difficulties?
Any known problems?
Also, I saw the thread that recommended not using descriptive URLs due to a 'canonical URL problem' and because Search engines will ignore new URLs for a page if they have that exact page cached with a different URL that isn't 301 redirected.
