CSC vs Customer Code

Sorry if this is basic question but can someone tell me the difference between

CSC and Customer Code.  There is no help on either of these fields.

Under website setup there is an option
"Display Customer Code Field on Payment Info Page"  but no explanation of what it is for.

I know Customer Code has to do with level 2 processing.. but only enough to ask this question.
