Customizing the Navigational Portlet

Can someone provide me with a resource or tips on how to customize the navigational portlet? I have scoured my Netsuite admin interface and I do not see any customizing options anywhere.

Is there a way to stop item names from showing up in the navigational portlet?  Some of my categories will have up to 30 products and it would be to much to show all the item names in the navigational portlet.

I have browsed several Web sites using Netsuite and they customized their navigation portlet by adding images and highlighting, how are they doing this?
