Gift Certificate Issues

We are implementing gift certificates for our store, and we encountered 2 problems:

It seems that there is no way to suppress the Web store gift certificate initial notification e-mail. This is the email is sent when the certificate order is created - pending approval. We find no use for the email, and were told by customers is seems suspicious. Anyone found a way to disable it?

Also, all gift certificate orders seem to have a shipping method associated with them. Customers are not prompted to select a shipping method during the checkout process - but the "Order Approved" email contains a shipping method. Its a bit confusing for the customer.
