expanding left side bar with long item names

I run in to this often...a store uses item names that are long strings of text/numbers/symbols for item names. NetSuite does not break the line to fit the line into the fixed width left side but instead expands the column to fit the item name. Does anyone know the CSS or other code to keep this from happening? I tried "overflow" settings and can't seem to get it to work. The workaround is to add a space manually to offending item names.
