left and right side navigation template in web site theme

I would like to have the following two tags in the left navigation template on my web site theme:
               
        1. <NLGLOBALSEARCHHTML> or <NLGLOBALSEARCHFORMHTML> (I'm not         
        sure what the differences are between these two tags, anyone know?)
        2. <NLSITENAVIGATIONHTML>

I would also like the following tag in the right navigation template on my web site theme:

       <NLCARTSUMMARYHTML>

The problems I'm having while trying to do this is that the right navigation template does not appear on our web page when I put <NLCARTSUMMARYHTML> or any html for that matter. Is this because netsuite can't have the right and left navigation showing at the same time? Even when I leave the left navigation blank the right side will not show up.
