Redeem Rewards Points for Items in webstore

Has anyone explored using the webstore as a way for customers to spend "rewards" points that they accumulate somehow?  Our business doesn't really lend itself to selling our actual products through the webstore, but we are thinking of implementing a rewards program based on their level of activity.

Ideally, a customer would login, see their rewards points balance (which would pull from custom fields in their customer record) and a bunch of products they could use those points for.

Has anyone thought about this or implemented it?  Does it sound possible?
