Adding Custom Fields to Information Items?

In order to bypass the 4,000 character limit, we set up a custom "overflow" field in an item record where we could continue our HTML and gain another 4,000 characters. 

I'm having difficulty (in fact, I've reached a dead end) doing the same for Information Items.  Has anyone else encountered this trouble and, if so, could you maybe give us some insight as to how you got around it?
