Customising Navigation Portlet

Hi

I am trying to customise the navigation portlet to our own look and feel.

Can anyone tell me how I can go about accessing the html that is pulled in through the <NLPORTLETCONTENTS> tag.

I am spefically looking to change the nasty gif bullets

/images/nav/stretch.gif

/images/nav/nub10t1.gif

and reconfigure the <td> tags.

It seems a shame that a nice piece of navigation functionality is ruined by the inability to only change colours and fonts which is also somewhat tricky given that generic CSS styles like "smalltext" are used pervasively throughout the site.
