Featured item issue - won't work with matrix items

Hi, on my site I have always had matrix items featured and showing on the main main page. Old items still show that way. But, new matrix items we created recently will not show on the main page when we select featured. Yet basic items (non matrix) created within the same basic time frame will show. Doesn't make sense. I checked and none use a item template. Why won't newly created matrix items show yet non matrix show on the main page.

I just noticed that this person is also having similar issues. I think there's an issue with how many or some mix of matrix and featured items.
