Web Sales Orders and Lot Numbering

Hello NS community-
Is anyone doing web-based sales orders of lot numbered items?  Our third party warehouse is requesting that we put the lot number on sales orders sent to the warehouse for fulfillment.  We're trying to figure out the easiest way to get the NS system to automatically select lot numbers (FIFO method) and assign to each line item after the order is placed by a customer.
One theory involves using a set of web service calls to calculate the appropriate lot number and assigning...is there a SuiteScript way of doing this?
