Customer Center & Serial Numbers

We have a serialized product that we sell to a Customer through the customer center. 

I can't see that there's a way to add the serial number field to the online forms, neither the sales order nor the invoice.  And when viewing the fulfillment through the Customer Center the serial number field does not appear.

Do I need to create a custom field just to show data that is already there?  Anybody have any ideas to help me?
