Related Items not showing up as expected

I have followed the help and the manual files to the letter to create and display related items in our web store. However, they do not show up properly, and I am at a loss to determine why. I have set the related items in both items related items fields. For example, item ABC shows CDE as a related item, and CDE shows ABC as a related item.

What am I doing wrong?
