Promotion codes

ok just starting up our store and looking for some information on promotion codes.

I can enter it on the checkout page it validates, and then applies that discount to the order before submitting.

However on the confirmation page and the order email sent to the customer the amount reverts to the pre-promotion code amount.

Is this correct or am i missing a check box somewhere??
