relateditemthumbnailhtml in item template

I need to create a sub-section of a page with a product listing that uses a smaller thumbnail than the rest of the site.  I reduced the related item image size in setup->web site->image resizing, but when I try to use the attribute "relateditemthumbnailhtml" I get an error (I am using in the exact same context as "storedisplaythumbnail"--which works fine).  Does anyone know of a way to accomplish this reduced image size?  If the use of "relateditemthumbnailhtml" is context-specific, how is that context defined?
