Count of Items in a Category / Subcategory

in Web Site / E-Commerce

Is anyone aware of a tag / variable which already exists to display the number of items within a category or subcategory?

If not, does anyone have an idea how I can make one?

The idea is to let users know 'what's in there' before they click on the subcategory.
