How to Change the Way Customers Login

Background: We are currently migrating to NetSuite e-commerce from a different e-commerce platform (X-Cart). We are going to move everything we can to NetSuite and rebuild our online store there.

The Problem: When customers logged into our X-Cart store they used a "username" rather than their email to login. I have been researching for about 3 hours now on ways to change the login page to use "username" and a password (rather than email & password) to no avail.

Is there anyway to change this, or do I have to force my customers to use email when we go live with NetSuite?
