Gift Certificates

I'm just getting started with Gift Certificates primarily because I want to use them in radio promotions, giving away a $50 gift certificate.

From what I've read so far, the only way to generate a GC is to purchase one.  I'd like to create them "internally" so I can give them away.  I guess if necessary I can buy a GC for $50 and just change the charge to $0.01 before I process/bill the order to my credit card.

Has anyone suggested GC be a matrix item? Correct me if I'm wrong, to sell GC's of different denominations they currently have to be separate items?
