Adding item to shopping cart

I need to automatically add an item at I need to automatically add an item at $0.0 price to the shopping cart when the shopping cart totals $25 or more.

I have inserted a script in the theme to do this, but I get an alert saying that
"This item is no longer available".
Item with internal id 17 is displayed in Web Site and I am able to manually add this item to the cart.

See the code below. Is this the right approach to do this? Is there any other way to do this?
