How to hide or customize display of checkout "portlet"

We have another site that has these links customized but I can't for the life of me figure out how... I'm talking about the bulleted list with items "Address Information", "Payment Information" and "Review and Submit Order" that displays on checkout pages, I want to hide and/or customize this so it fits in my layout. Right now the way the list is formatted it screws up my layout (or theme, whatever)
