Can I make custom fields on checkout page hidden?

I've added a custom field to the checkout page of our NetSuite website.  I'm populating it using javascipt.  I've put it on the checkout page because I want the field value to be passed to the sales order.  That all works fine.  However, the field shows up on the checkout page and since it's all really behind the scenes, I would prefer that the customer not see the field at all.  Is there a way to tell the field to be hidden?
