Basic JS Help

I am trying to create a very basic JS in the item template that will look at a List dropdown in the the item record and return a statement based on what is selected in the dropdown.  Basically a IF List='a', THEN show 'statement regarding a'.  I am JS illiterate so any help would be appreciated.
