descriptive URL still gets querystring

Okay, so I'm experimenting with using just /item_name instead of /tab/category/item as my URL scheme.  But when I switch, the storeURL I get is not just item_name but

item_name?sc=15&category=-115

With the full tree, I don't get those query parameters.

Actually, I just noticed on my second (multi)site, I don't get those query params.

What's going on?
