Changing "Default Role for New Customers" changes the role of existing customers too

in Web Site / E-Commerce

I have created a new role for all my webstore customers.
Because I have customer center set up, I want to different them.

It seems that when I set the General Preference of Default Role for New Customers, it changes the role in all my existing customers as well.
