Create matrix item and populate with serialized items

Is it possible to create a matrix item and populate it with serialized items that have already been created?  We have thousands of serialized inventory items, many of which are different color options, e.g. xxxLVB (black), xxxLVQ (white), xxxLVS (stainless).  I want to create the matrix item, xxxLV, and make the other serialized items subitems.
