Making Shopping Carts Expire Manually

Is there any way we can make all the shopping cart info for our site expire as of a certain date? We're going through a transition on a certain class of product and we'd like to make sure there are no lingering shopping carts out there containing those items to avoid customer confusion when they're unable to check out due to 0 stock on the items that are in their cart.
