Zip code not marked mandatory in checkout

In hosted web stores, there is no asterisk next to "zip code" in checkout (on the shipping info pages (both editing and creating entries) and also on the address info pages.

I tried adding HTML in the Zip / Postal Code area under Customize Text, but that  area does not support HTML so I believe the only workaround is to apply the asterisk with Javascript.

Is there an existing defect # for this?

It would also be nice if this area were better documented so I didn't have to test that out on a live site to find out how it worked, but that's a whole other issue. If there's a defect # for this as well, I'd like to know what that one is as well.
