Excluding items from site search

We're looking for a way to exclude particular items from a site search in our store. In particular, (but not limited to) information items.

I'm tempted to pull all the results cells into a JSON object and filter through them with JS/jQuery, but I'd REALLY like to do this without (yet another) client-side work around.
