Possible for customer to self-select lead source?

We've currently got a system where customers can self-select how they heard about us during the new customer creation process through an entity field and I'm wondering if there is any way to tie this in with their Lead Source? Currently, we're maintaining two separate lists and would like to consolidate things into one, so what they select as "how did you hear about us" becomes that customer's lead source. Any ideas?
