Soft 404 - SEO process for removing pages in website

I am curious how others deal with products that are discontinued and you want to remove from your website.  I know how to make them disappear from my website but how do you handle and fix soft 404 errors that appear in Google webmaster tools?  What process should be followed once you remove a product from your website?  Thanks.
