Sales Order / Basket

Can anyone tell me please, if a customer has items in their basket, how do I find the sales order ID that I'm guessing is created in the background?

So for instance to get a hold of the basket items in a script I know I can do :

var order = nlapiGetWebContainer().getShoppingSession().getOrder().getFieldValues();  var items= order.items;
