Automatically Apply Applicable Promos

Is there a way to automatically apply promotions when an applicable item is added to the cart?

For some sales we want to give everyone the sale price, but show on the back end that a discount has been applied, instead of just changing the price. Trying to figure out the easiest way to accomplish this.
