PASS URL PROMOTION CODE TO CHECKOUT - How to add it to Add to Cart button

Is there a way to pass the promo codes from the add to cart script? We want the coupon to be applied automatically when items are added to the shopping cart, is this at all possible?

This way the client doesn't need to add the coupon code, once the item(s) are added to the cart they will show the discount automatically.
