Are there any scripting work-arounds for adding free shipping to select kit items in the cart?

Can we script free shipping to work on kit items? Like if a kit is in a dynamic group (a saved search), then it gets zero shipping when in the cart?

We have a custom "free shipping" checkbox field in our items and checking it adds the item to a saved search of "free shipping items". Works great for our advanced promotion for free shipping in the cart.  However, advanced promotions do NOT work on kit items (don't ask me why).  Ugh. Anyhow, has anyone found a scripting work arounds to this issue?
