Scorecards, periods, custom KPIs and confusion

hi, i'm looking for help getting my head round scorecards...

[*]It appears that KPI scorecards come in two flavours: period-based and date-based. Period-based scorecards don't allow you to use saved searches for custom KPIs. Is that how it works? Or is there a way to make a saved search period-based?
[*]If i do a simple date-based scorecard with a saved search for employees, i can show the current number of employees, but i can't figure out how to show previous levels of employees. What date (hire, release?) should i have in the search and what date-ranges in the scorecard, etc? I have the same problem with other saved searches - cases, phone calls, etc.
