Custom KPI to show Profit per Department

We would like to start to make use of custom KPI's so our Department Managers can start making some more informed decisions.  We can create Income Statements by Department, but I don't think these are available as KPI's.  The built in Profit KPI seems to be based off the Income Statement Report, yet custom KPI's are based off of Custom Searches, so I can't figure out the best way to accomplish this.
