how to include UPC as part of the global search results?

I read the NS help files, it says global search can be made to include custom fields - but what about standard fields?

in our case we want UPC codes to be part of the global search, as many customers who call us do not have the manufacturer product code but do have the UPC.

Is there any way to include UPC as part of the global search results?
