Lost item descriptions on Quotes

In order to save screen space on an opportunity form, I’ve set the item description field to not show.  Now when creating a quote from this opportunity, item descriptions are left blank.  Yet, when creating a quote without going through an opportunity, item descriptions are supplied as usual.

Is this the expected behavior for item descriptions on a quote?
