Best practice for BOGOFs

Hope I posted this in the correct location. Basically we want to offer some packaged/bundled promotions (i.e. buy x get y free or buy x and y at a reduced price).

I want inventory, costings, etc... controlled by each product in the promotion. I also want the sales history to be tied to the individual item.

What is the best method of doing this? Kits?
