Sending out samples / customer stage

I know there is an old discussion but there is no answer which is usefull for us.

Is there a way to send a sample to a prospect without changing their stage to customer?

We send out product samples by creating sales orders (a separate form) and fulfilling them so inventory is correct (we also use the integrated UPS shipping so SFA is no option for us). When we do this though the prospect becomes a customer for us according to Netsuite.
We don't want this offcourse It should stay a prospect

I presume this can be done using a script, can someone help me solving this issue
