Control which issue fields generate a message?

The ability to have the system automatically send an email to a user upon a field change in an issue is super useful.  But, can we control (perhaps via script?) which fields might trigger this action?  I'd like prevent it from emailing out when we update some custom sync-tracking fields that are not relevant to the end user.
