Sub total by group

I am trying to generate a Sales report, which includes
Item category   from Item record,
Gross Total, Shipping Total, Tax total, customer name, invoice number,  from Invoice record.

all i need is i need to group the transactions by Item Categoty and show sub total at each group.

I have tried to customize transaction type report, but here i am unable to get the shipping and tax amount fields
can you please explain me what type of report i have to generate and what i need to do to show sub total by item category group.
