FOB field locked at 13 characters ?!?

I can't put what I need to in the FOB field in 13 characters.  What is going on?  When/why did Netsuite get so stingy on # of characters allocated to a field like this? 

I assume this is not user-changeable, and I'd prefer not to have to reinvent the wheel and create a new custom field to duplicate the standard field NetSuite already has, but which is insufficient.

Any ideas?

2003!!!!  Amazing that a three year old enhancement request would still live, unimplemented.  No wonder any given enhancement request gets lost in the shuffle if there are 3 year old enhancement requests like this lying around.
