Advanced Billing - Prorate Invoices

I am trying to setup a sales order that adheres to a quarterly billing schedule.  My requirements are for the schedule to start on specific dates i.e. 01 Jan, 01 Apr, 01 Jul and 01 Oct.

How can I prorate invoice the customer for the balance of the current period before the first full invoice goes out at the start of the next period?
