Can't Copy Sales Orders

I used to be able to copy sales orders, and maintain the link to the estimate. This stopped working recently and I'm having a heck of a time trying to get support to report it as a bug (case# 640088). Here's the sequence:
[LIST]
[*]create an estimate
[*]generate a sales order from the estimate
[*]click the make copy button on the sales order
[*]before you save the new sales order, notice that the estimate link is present
[*]save the new sales order and notice that the estimate link is gone and the new sales order doesn't show up in the estimate's link history
