List Search - Export to Excel

We created a custom list search. The function works great. However, when we try to email the list using the "Send as Excel" check box, it sends the file as a CSV, and the formatting is off.

Is there a way I can FORCE the "send as excel" check box to actually send the file as Excel instead of CSV?

Any help appreciated!
